After nearly two decades of brewing in the mountains, the Sleeping Lady Brewing Company has opened its new brewery in the Black Mountain Gorge.
The brewery opened its doors to the public in March of 2019 and the company plans to offer several beers at their new location.
The first two beers, Sleeper and Nightshade, were made with the brewery’s famous “Sleeping Lady” brew system.
The third, Black Mountain and its residents, was brewed using the system of the SleepingLady Brewing Company, a local brewery.
The Black Mountain Brewing Co. has been making beer since 1976 and has a history of brewing locally and producing quality beers that are always available in the area.
It was in the works for a while, but was finally ready to open the brewery to the general public after the death of the original owner.
“The brewery has been in the process of getting some equipment, but we didn’t really have any funding or the right place to brew.
We did some research and came up with the idea of opening a brewery in a location we could grow,” said owner, Michael Purdy.
“After much deliberation, we settled on the Black Mountains because we’re a beautiful place and a lot of our customers live there and they want to brew and enjoy their beers.”
The brewery is located at the base of a mountain that overlooks the Black River.
The beer is brewed on a small, two-barrel system with a mix of grains, yeast and hop varieties.
The beers are aged for two years in oak barrels and then bottled.
It’s hoped the brewery will be able to serve its customers in the Gorge.
“We really wanted to be able go out and do some business in the neighborhood that wasn’t a tourist attraction and was more of a craft brewery and artisan beer shop,” Purdy said.
“A lot of people have been brewing and serving beer in the local area for quite some time.
The last brewery we brewed was in 2016 in the city of Black Mountain, and that was a successful brewery.”
In 2018, the brewery hosted a tasting event that included beers from several local breweries.
It also serves as a small gathering place for locals to enjoy local beers and have a good time.
“I have been working in the beer industry for quite a while and it’s been an honor to be the brewery partner of Black mountain,” Puffy said.
The SleepingLady Brewery will open their doors to beer fans in 2019.
Purdy plans to continue to make quality beers and has plans to expand to the Black Hills and beyond in the future.
“This is a very special moment in my life, and I want to share it with all the people of Black Hills, the people in our community, the local beer fans and people in the general beer market,” he said.
