A man who cut the trees down on his property and took pictures with them has been sentenced to a year in jail.
A district court in Nagpur on Tuesday sentenced the 54-year-old man to five years’ jail.
The court also imposed fine of Rs 10,000 on him.
The court also ordered him to give up his property.
The man, whose name has not been released, was arrested by the Nagpur police in January this year.
The case came to light when a passer-by took photos of the beechs and posted it on social media.
The photo was later shared on WhatsApp.
The police seized the pictures and sent them to the district collector of Nagpur.
The collector, however, took the photos offline and turned them over to the police.
The pictures were later shared online by a local news channel.
The accused, who is a resident of a neighbouring village, had allegedly threatened the residents of his village and tried to steal their land.
The accused was arrested in February this year and sent to judicial custody.
